The Chemex filter is not interchangeable with standard pour-over paper filters. It is 20–30% thicker than a standard paper filter — a proprietary bonded paper with a tighter fiber weave that removes virtually all coffee oils and virtually all coffee fines from the brew.
This produces the characteristic Chemex cup: extraordinarily clean and bright, with no lipid-carried heaviness, no sediment, and nothing to obscure the natural acids and aromatics of high-quality single-origin coffee. If you find French press coffee murky and espresso heavy, Chemex coffee filtered through these papers is the antidote.
Natural filters are unbleached — the paper has a light brown color. Rinse thoroughly before use (pour 200g of hot water through the dry filter before adding coffee) to remove any paper taste. The rinsing step is essential with natural filters; don’t skip it.
